Kilkorin: Game Info

Kilkorin is home to a majority human/halfling population. Founded barely one century ago, this relatively young city is built upon tiefling ruins, which the current residents plumb for riches and secrets. The tripartite coalition of dwarves, elves, and tieflings invaded recently after a vein of floatstone was discovered.

Kilkorin had long been rife with unrest and chaos; the occupation has caused these factors to erupt almost daily. In the face of occupation, the city is fragmented—from government agencies to religious orders, commercial enterprise to social groups, down to the citizenry itself. Some have fled outright; some have retreated outside the city to plan a counterattack; some try to maintain order and keep some semblance of normalcy; and some throw their lot in with the occupiers.

Game Scope

This is a sandbox campaign. The PCs are empowered to chart their own course. Along the way, you’ll cross paths with various groups and individuals. You may find yourselves at cross purposes, or share common goals. How you react is up to you.

Some overall storylines are planned and general goals are in place for various groups and NPCs; I’ll also build plot threads off your characters’ backstories and actions. The following section includes essential info on creating a PC for the game.

(The Kilkorin pages also include a session recap blog, additional background, NPC lists, and hooks for character ideas. That stuff isn't required reading, but it will be helpful to at least skim.)

Character Concept

Pretty much anything you want, bearing in mind the two key points below and the other notes on this page.

1. Your character must have a reason for being in Kilkorin during the occupation. The most likely reasons include:

  • Soldier/mercenary/camp follower in the Tripartite Coalition

  • Soldier in the Kilkorin army/navy

  • Partisan (member of a Kilkorin resistance group)

  • Figure of note in Kilkorin trying to make the best of a bad situation

  • Kilkorin resident trying to maintain some semblance of a life and/or unable to simply flee for some reason

  • Member of some third-party government delegation already in residence or dispatched to Kilkorin

  • Adventurer/mercenary/criminal hoping to make your fortune amid the chaos of the occupation

2. Your character must have a relationship with at least one other PC. You don’t need to share concepts or motivations, just have a foundation of trust.

5e Rules Parameters

All 5e options are available—with the exception of the list below. These details apply INSTEAD OF what’s in the 5e rules.

  • Available species: Dwarf, elf, halfling, human, tiefling

  • Ability generation: Use either the “standard array” or “point buy” method

  • Ability score increase: +2 to one ability score and +1 to one other ability score of your choice

  • Racial traits: Apply as normal for the racial variant chosen

  • Current level: Characters are now 3rd level

Also, for what it’s worth: in the city, light armor (at most) and smaller weapons are the norm. Equip your character however you like, of course; just wanted to mention that you’ll only tend to run into heavier-duty stuff with professional adventurers, soldiers, elite troopers, and heavy infantry types.
